  • Basic alterations are simple, common changes that most tailors can perform quickly and with minimal skill. They usually involve length adjustments, minor width changes, or small fit improvements that don’t require major reconstruction of a garment.

    • Hemming pants, skirts, or dresses – Shortening the hemline to match your shoe height or preferred break (no-break, quarter-break, or half-break). This is one of the most frequent alterations and is generally straightforward.

    • Adjusting sleeve length – Shortening or lengthening sleeves to match your arm length or style preference. This is often done with a simple seam or hem.

    • Taking in or letting out seams by a small amount – For example, taking in a shirt or jacket by 1–2 inches to reduce excess fabric, or letting out a seam slightly to add width. These changes are usually limited to the garment’s existing seam allowance.

    • Minor waist adjustments – Small waist changes (1–2 inches) to improve fit, especially in shirts, blouses, or casual pants. Larger waist changes require more complex work.

    • Button or buttonhole adjustments – Adding, removing, or repositioning buttons, or slightly adjusting buttonholes for a better fit.

What’s Considered a Basic Clothing Alteration

    Why they’re “basic”
These alterations don’t involve major structural changes, extensive deconstruction, or complex pattern fitting. They can often be completed in a few days and are generally less expensive than more complex work like full suit tailoring or reshaping a jacket’s structure and shortening sleeves on suit jackets.

We do outsource to another company for more complex work.

  • Above Fashions always take the time to talk through what you want to achieve for your final fit. The best thing to do if you change your mind is to contact us before the alteration is performed.

We require that the same accessory pieces are worn during your pick up; otherwise, we will not be able to confirm the accuracy of the alterations if not. Once we confirm that the alterations were performed accurately, the garment is yours to take home and enjoy!

We always take the time to get it right the first time so you will have the amazing experience we deliver for all of our customers.

If you are unsure of the final fit and look you are trying to achieve, we may advise you to take a bit more time to make your decision. It's important that you are ready before we start altering your garments. Once the garment has been altered to the specifications that were determined during your fitting, future alterations for the garment are considered new alterations and will cost additional money.
